This study investigates the effects of attitudes of English learning on students' achievement focusing on high school students. Attitude is one of the most important affective factors in English learning. Because attitudes are formed by the environment which surrounds learners, it's possible for teachers to change their students' attitudes. Also, to consider learners' affective factor can contribute to the instruction according to learners' level. Research questions of the thesis are as follows. 1. What is the effect of the attitudes of English learning on students' achievement? 2. How students' English achievement affects their attitudes of English learning according to their gender? Attitudes towards English learning were measured directly by means of a questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 40 statements devised to measure 6 kinds of attitudes of learning English. The subjects of this research were high school students in the second grade made up 4 classes. The total number of the subjects is 120. One second are girls and the rest are boys. The main findings of the study are as follows.First, it seems that there was a significant difference in attitudes according to genders. Second, the attitudes towards English learning and textbook effects on students' achievement regardless of their gender. Third, the learner has more positive attitudes, the higher their achievement. Finally, the level of achievement and gender effect on the attitudes. The results were analysed through T-test and ANOVA(analysis of variance), with Scheffe method used in post-hoc analyses.The results presented in this article provide further support for the hypothesis that learners' affective factors in English learning should be considered.
