This study aims to identify the effect of using newspapers and advertizing bills on representative ability of language. For the purpose, the following questions are presented:
This study presents a question to be considered : How is the effect of using newspapers and advertizing bills on representative ability of language of children with mental retardation ?
The subjects of the study are two children with mental retardation who are attending special class in K elementary school in Jeonnam province and selected based on results of observation of researcher, documentary speculation, the KEDE-WISC Intelligence Test, the Social Maturity Test, and Simple Portrait Test.
This study uses the questionnaire on expressive language ability developed by the author according to the purpose of the study. It contains 30 words to be taught, which are collected in the newspapers and advertizing bills program. They are selected from the words considered in the as appropriate to the level of five and eight years-old children that are frequently used in mass-media (newspapers and advertizement bills) and considered as necessary in respect to school, social life, economy and leisure. Then three tests are conducted: pretest, mid-test and post-test.
The results of the study are presented as follows:
It is found that most of the children with mental retardation show better results in concentration, expressive language ability and confidence when familiar visual media are used rather than simple teaching media such as picture cards.
The results suggest that the program using newspapers and advertizing bills is very effective for expressive language ability of children with mental retardation in spite of its short period and its effectiveness are continuously maintained.
