Abstract
Objective: The study was aimed at providing baseline data to improve work conditions and create a better work environment for EMT-Paramedic's (EMTs) in South Korea. A comparative analysis of the work-related stress and job satisfaction of EMTs working at was conducted to determine the differences between the two work environments and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of organization.

Methods: In the study, a survey was conducted from March 28 to April 18, 2017, targeting 79 EMT-Paramedic's in Gwangju Metropolitan City, Jeollanam-do, and Jeollabuk-do, and 103 EMT-Paramedic's working at 14 hospitals designated as regional and local emergency medical centers. For the statistical analysis, chi-square test, t-test, analysis of variance, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were performed using SPSS/WIN 20.0.

Results: Cronbach's alpha of each tool was 0.871 for work-related stress and 0.931 for job satisfaction. The sum of work-related stress was 2.92 (119 EMTs) and 3.01 (hospital EMTs), showing almost no difference. The ANCOVA results after the correction for the factor related to work-related stress were 3.02 (119 EMTs) and 2.94 (hospital EMTs), showing almost no difference. The sum of job satisfaction was significantly lower for hospital EMTs than for fire station EMTs (2.98 vs. 2.54, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the ANCOVA results were 2.98 (119 EMTs) and 2.54 (hospital EMTs) before the correction, and 2.92 (119 EMTs) and 2.59 (hospital EMTs) after the correction, showing that the job satisfaction of the hospital EMTs was considerably lower than that of the 119 EMTs. The result was statistically significant (p = 0.008). In addition, the results showed that the smaller the monthly average number of patients, the higher the monthly income, and the higher the frequency of vacations, the lower the work-related stress and the higher the job satisfaction.

Conclusion: To reduce the work-related stress of 119 EMTs, measures should be taken to prevent assault against EMTs at the scene and during the transportation, and to provide a rest area for EMTs, who are always under stress, waiting for emergency calls at any moment. Hospital EMTs should be offered more work flexibility by recruiting more EMTs to relieve overwork due to too many patients. Furthermore, to increase job satisfaction of both 119 and hospital EMTs, their working conditions and welfare should be improved. For hospital EMTs, wage, yearly wage increase rate, and job stability should be improved.
