Late-school period Maternal overprotection Problematic behavior
Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between children's perception to maternal overprotection and problematic behaviors of late-school students.

Methods: The study subjects were 290 fifth- and sixth-grade students from six elementary schools located in J-Gun, Jelloanamdo. The data were collected by self-administered questionnaire composed of general and family characteristics, scales of maternal overprotection and problematic behaviors. In order to identify the relationship, the used statistical methods were t-test, variance analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis.

Results: The mean scores of maternal overprotection and problematic behaviors were 45.51±11.39 and 77.60±26.71, respectively. The results of the simple analysis showed significant differences in children's problematic behaviors according to their grade, number of best friends, school records, drinking experience, father's education level, and housework sharing state of father. Maternal overprotection was positively correlated with problematic behaviors of the subjects. The result of multiple regression analysis was showed that problematic behaviors was statistically associated with maternal overprotection. In addition, children's relationship with peers and regular physical activities were also associated significant with their problematic behavior.

Conclusions: Based on these findings, it was concluded that problematic behaviors of children increase as mothers engage in more over protectiveness towards their children. Therefore, to reduce children's problematic behaviors, intervention and strategy should be taken to improve mothers' attitude towards child rearing.
