Objectives: The present study was conducted to determine the relationship between degree of work performance and job satisfaction in NICU nurses.

Methods: The subjects of this study were 134 NICU nurses in the neonatal intensive care units of six hospitals located in the Honam region. The data ware collected using a self-report questionnaire composed of the general characteristics, work performance, stress, and job satisfaction of the subjects. The used statistical analysis methods were t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis.

Results: The mean scores of work performance and job satisfaction of the subjects were 3.8±0.5 and 3.2±0.3, respectively (on a five-point scale). Job satisfaction differed significantly according to age group, marital status, having a child, health status, position, total work experience, and monthly income level. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the level of work performance and job satisfaction. As a result of multiple regression analysis, job satisfaction of the NICU nurses were statistically significant associated with work performance (β=0.132, p=0.014).

Conclusions: As the results showed, the degree of work performance of the NICU nurses was related with job satisfaction. In addition, the lower the job stress, the better the subjective health status, and the higher the monthly income level, the level of job satisfaction increased.
Therefore, further research should be conducted on variables that can increase job satisfaction and on nursing interventions such as strategies to improve the degree of work performance among NICU nurses.
