This study was performed to compare the diet quality and diversity according to types of obesity categorized by body mass index and waist circumference among Korean adults aged 19-64.
This study used the data of 5th (Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES-V) and 11,081 particpants of total were defined as study subjects. Type of obesity was categorized into 4 groups (Type I: BMI obesity + abdominal obesity; Type II: BMI obesity only; Type III: abdominal obesity only; Normal). To compare the diet quality and diversity according to obesity type, ANOVA (Analysis of variance) and ANCOVA (Analysis of co-variance) were used with stratification of age group (19-44 years, 45-64 years).
As results of comparative analysis on diet quality, there were significant differences between diet qualities in energy, protein, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, niacin, phosphorous and iron and type of obesity in 19-44 age group, while there were significant differences between diet qualities on protein, vitamin C, phosphorous and type of obesity in 45-64 age group. There was not a significant difference between diet diversity score and type of obesity in Korean adults.
This study showed that diet qualities of some nutrients were different in obesity type, while not diet diversity in Korean adults. There should be considered in effort to improve intake of over-and short nutrients and in further studies to evaluate the nutrient quality on obesity.
