Influence of Fermented Beta-glucan Intake and Complex Exercise Prescription on Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar and Lipid Levels of Senior Diabetes Patients

This study tested the effect of blood pressure, blood sugar and lipid levels prescribing beta glucan powder and low-degree exercise for eight weeks to the senior patients with 2nd type of diabetes. The subjects of this study were thirty-four diabetic patients over 65 years old at A Health Promotion center and B senior welfare center in Gwangju, Korea. Divided into two groups of seventeen members, the subjects of one group were asked to take Beta-glucan powder(3g), which were fermented and extracted from blossom mushrooms, with water twice a day at eight A.M and seven P.M. In addition, low-degree exercise programs were applied with senioraerobics and elastic bands for fifty minutes three times a week. This was done for 8 weeks, while the control group received no treatment. Before and after testing, blood pressure, blood sugar, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and neutral fat were measured according to the scale and instruction of past studies and were analyzed statistically. The result of this study is as follows.
First, in the difference of blood sugar, the control group' level (124.67±42.32) was lower than the experimental group(106.58±17.00) and there was a relevant difference statistically. Therefore, it seems that prescribing Beta-glucan powder and low-degree exercise simultaneously is effective for reducing blood sugar. Second, in the difference of blood pressure, the systolic blood pressure of the group(132.17±14.82) was lower than that of the controlled group(138.92±17.75) and there was relevant difference statistically. However, in the diastolic blood pressure, the control group(81.45±8.21) was lower than the experimental group( 83.91±9.97) but there was no relevant difference statistically. Accordingly, there was no substantial gap between the group and the controlled group in blood pressure. But as there was a relevant reduction in the systolic blood pressure of the group prescribed with Beta-glucan and low-degree exercise for eight weeks, Beta-glucan and low-degree exercise simultaneously may have an influence on reducing blood pressure. Third, in the total cholesterol level, the experimental group(188.33±3.27) was lower than the control group(201.17±2.47) and there was relevant difference statistically. Thus, prescribing Beta-glucan and low-degree exercise simultaneously for eight weeks has an influence on reducing total cholesterol as well. Forth, in the difference of neutral fat, the control group(77.83±30.83) was lower than the experimental group(83.97±34.16) but there was not relevant difference statistically. However, as neutral fat reduced than preceded point in the group, we can infer that taking Beta-glucan powder and low-degree exercise for eight weeks is effective. Fifth, in the difference of high density lipoprotein cholesterol, the experimental group(67.78±18.73) was higher than the control group(64.87±12.95) but there was not relevant gap. However, as the high density lipoprotein cholesterol increased than past in the experimental group, we can also infer that taking Beta-glucan powder and low-degree exercise for eight weeks is effective. Sixth, in the difference of low density lipoprotein cholesterol, the experimental group(107.50±32.26) was lower than the control group(119.67±22.22) and it was statistically relevant. As a result, we consider that prescribing taking Beta-glucan powder and low-degree exercise simultaneously for eight weeks has an influence on the reducing low density lipoprotein cholesterol.
