Effect of pain control and improve function of knee applied to osteoarthritis by carbon surface-heating

Purpose - This study was to investigate the effects of pain control and improvement function to far infrared ray of carbon surface heating element applied on elderly women with knee osteoarthritis.
Method - The subjects for this study were forty-five subjects with osteoarthritis, who were divided convenice sampling into 3 groups, control(15 female, no intervention), ceramic far infrared ray(15 female, applied ceramic far infrared rays) and carbon surface-heating(15 female, applied carbon surface-heating) From July to September, 2010, after treatment measuring VAS, PPT and K-WOMAC. For 2 far infraed ray groups the was consisted of 3 times per week. 30minutes in each session and lasted 3 weeks. At the point of/before and after treatment, after 3 weeks. The collected data was analysis by statistical package SPSS/W(ver. 17.0) using repeated measured ANOVA, After treatment - before treatment, after 3 weeks - before treatment saw the value of the difference, and comparison groups using one-way ANOVA. (adjustied by Tukey method).
1. VAS shows significant difference in ceramic far infrared ray, carbon surface heating group.
2. PPT shows significant difference in ceramic far infrared ray, carbon surface heating group.
3. K-WOMAC shows significant difference in ceramic far infrared ray, carbon surface heating group depends on time.
These results represent decreased pain and improved function by applied carbon surface heating element and ceramic far infrared ray on osteoarthritis knee.
Conclusion - Existing heating method showed decreased pain and improved function by on osteoarthritis knee. Also, applied carbon surface heating element showed, too. Therefore, carbon surface heating element will be a good treatment for osteoarthritis.
