Abstract
Oral Health Educational Diagnosis of
Preschool Children Teacher

Objectives : Oral health of young children is absolutely critical to maintaining a desirable lifelong health. The level of understanding of oral health on the part of preschool teachers can significantly impact the child's future oral health. The objective of the study is to assess the level of understanding of the oral health by the preschool teachers. The findings will be used to aid the children to maintain a desirable oral health throughout their adult life.
Materials and methods : We conducted a direct visit survey of 415 teachers who teach at the preschool educational centers located in Gwangyang, Sunchon and Yeosu in eastern Jeollanamdo region between September 21, 2009 and October 24, 2009. The study was conducted with 409 responses after removing 6 invalid responses.
The PRECEDE model (Predisposing, Reinforcing and Enabling Constructs in Educational Diagnosis and Evaluation) for health promotion, proposed by Green, et al (1980) was adopted in this study. The questions on the survey are composed of 6 social diagnosis and epidemiological diagnosis questions, 10 behavioral, 9 predisposing factors, 3 enabling factors, and 4 reinforcing factors. There are a total of 32 questions on the survey, all of which are 5-point Likert scale.
Results
1. The study revealed that after the snacks and meals, 94.1% of the teachers showed the children how to brush teeth, and toothbrush exchange rate was 92.2%. The study showed that the cognitive level of oral health management of the teachers is reasonably high.
2. On diagnosing the weak point of oral health education, the percentage of preventive dental procedures is as follows: regular toothbrushing accounts for 73.3%, periodic dental checkup 18.3%, and as an on going education method, the audio-visual education accounts for 48.2%, and exhibition education 24.0%.
3.On diagnosing the oral health education enabling factors, the method of collecting the information for the oral health education was as follows. It was 30.9% by dentists and dental hygienist, 27.1% from newspapers and magazines and TV, and 24.8% from internet dental websites. As a learning route, it was 33.3% by health centers and 18.6% self-made.
4.On diagnosing oral health reinforcing factors, we found out that the following are obstacles on oral health education. it was 28.0 % lacking of informational media, 21.8% inadequate knowledge and 17.2 % substandard program. It also showed that 46.5 % preferred dentists as their educational instructors, 38.8 % preferred dental hygienists.
Conclusions:This study showed that the development of oral health educational system and other forms of public media is absolutely critical.
