Abstract
The freezing of the stratified fluid with an aqueous sodium chloride(H₂O - NaCl) solution and silicone oil on a horizontal wall is investigated experimentally.
Experiments were conducted with salt concentrations of 5, 19, and 15% by weight and different hot wall temperatures. As the field of temperature and salt concentration was very stable, the temperature in the cavity was mostly governed by the conduction. The effect of superheat was clearly discernible and was affected by the natural convection flow at the upper part of the cavity and decreased near to the lower part of the cavity. The effect of intial salt concentration was clearly discernible in the upper part of the cavity, but there was little effect of the initial salt concentration in the bottom part of the cavity. The average freezing rate decreased as the initial salt concentration increased.
