The effect of group art therapy focusing on reciprocity on the behavioral and emotional characteristics of elementary school students in multicultural families

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of group art therapy focusing on reciprocity on the behavioral and emotional characteristics of elementary school students in multicultural families.
The research was conducted with the help of Gwangju Metropolitan City OOGu multi-cultural family center. The experiment and controlled group each consist of 20 students who are in the second, third, forth grade elementary school in multi-cultural families. The experiment group of students who were willingly participated in the program are from A and B Child Community Center. The controlled group of students who were not participated in the program are from C and D Child Community Center. The term of the research is from December, 2016 to March, 2017. For 13 weeks, the eighty-minute programs are conducted every Wednesday and Thursday after school at the each center. The first stage of the program is designed to increase interest in the program with building rapport between the counsellor and the children. At the second stage, the children can express their subconscious desire freely by themselves, which promotes the self-esteem and sociality. Through that, they can overcome self-defense mind and deliver their internal emotion and opinion truly. The final stage of the program helps children form the positive self-image and their own sociality. After conducting the group art therapy program to elementary school students in multi-cultural families, its contribution to the enhancement of self-esteem and sociality is examined in detail through this research.
First, behavioral change of elementary school students in multicultural families with group art therapy focusing on reciprocity was affected by the increasing number of questions of all children and positive response. and it is believed that the positive changes occurred in the children who have a tendency to shrink or aggressive, the children become more active, their opinions can be told one by one, and the range of thinking is expanded slightly.
Second, group art therapy focusing on reciprocity was improved in three areas of four self-esteem group of elementary school students of multicultural family. The experimental group applied group art therapy program showed better self-esteem score than control group not participating in group art therapy. In other words, the experimental group showed a statistically significantly higher improvement than the control group.
Third, group art therapy with an focusing on reciprocity was improved in six areas of eight sociability group of elementary school students in multicultural families.
These results can be attributed to the positive perception of the self-esteem, and ultimately the positive change of sociality.
The result of this study suggest that group art therapy programs have significant effects on self-esteem and sociality, which are emotional characteristics of elementary school students in multicultural families.
