Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of a group art therapy on emotional awareness and expression, and stress coping ability on school-aged children with emotional and behavior problem. Methods: A quasi-experimental with non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was conducted. The participants were 52 children with emotional and behavioral problem on 4 elementary school in G city (Experimental group=23. Control group=29). The experimental group received the group art therapy program, and the comparison group received the program after the experiment. Data were collected during June 1st and August 15th, 2015 through self-administered questionnaires at two times: prior to the intervention and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using χ2-test and t-test. Results: After the intervention, school-aged children with emotional and behavior problem in the experimental group reported significant differences in emotional awareness and expression(t=2.076, p=.043), and stress coping ability(t=2.052, p=.046), compared to the control group. Conclusion: These results indicate that a group art therapy program for school-aged children with emotional and behavior problem is effective in improving emotional awareness and expression, and stress coping ability. Therefore further study should be done with larger and varied participants to confirm the effects of the grooup art therapy program for school-aged children.
