The purpose of this thesis is to study the internal images of animals through the work of researchers in relation to modern human's nature of greed with satires and fables.
History of anthropomorphism in paintings could be traced back to ancient mythologies of Egypt and Greece. Strict distinction between humanity and the divine began to surface in the various paintings of Egyptian Mythologies and Greek Mythologies. Personification of these historical paintings showed the gap between the divine counterparts and the humans through the use of symbols of power, authority and desire. Out of the methods of distinction used, desire, especially began to show up naturally in the modern human society as well, and this was particularly evident in the 19th century French society. Honoré Daumier, a renowned artist, was well known for depicting the absurdness of the French decadence era, showed such depictions could be related with the modern problems that we still face today.
Throughout the course of the research, allegorical representation of animals depicted in paintings was thoroughly investigated. Tigers depicted in folktales were often used as not being so scary, but humorously portraying the classical divide between the elites and commoners. Chinese contemporary artist Zhou Chunya, portrays his pet dog using surreal colors and overly exaggerated size to portray how humans rule over the animal kingdom. Another artist, Lim Sung Hee, whose work in comparison to my own, shows lots of similarities, in that we both use pigs as tools of satire. With my own work, Pigs are dressed in human clothing, standing right up, with sobering stares to illustrate the greed of modern man. In Lim Sung Hee's work, she uses various facial expressions and appearances candidly to build the elements of humor. Combining the satirical depictions of desire and greed through the use of allegorical imaginations and real world depictions of how things really are, builds up many questions and dialogue about individuals and societal structures.
These above mentioned methods relate with Dépaysement technique of René Magritte, because my research relates with stepping out of the norm, and changing the stereotypes by methodically altering the way of looking at things. Also Louis Wayne allegorical satire of human society using cats, and George Orwell's Animal Farm's allegorical uniqueness sharply pointed out the tragic importance of power in the modern civilizations, and such cues were variously used to expand on the satire and allegorical depictions in my own research.
Perpetual satirical depictions of pigs within my own research to link the endless desire of modern man allowed me as a researcher to reinterpret humanity of modern times. Through this thesis, I hope to build a foothold to allow people to find their way back to their true nature, escaping from the greed and lust filled grim modern society.
