A Study on the Analysis of F. Chopin Polonasie Fantaisie Op. 61

Frédéric Francois Chopin (1810 - 1849) was a composer who put piano music on the top in the Romantic era. His piano music harmonize his fatherland Poland's nationalism with the Frech elegant and refined atmosphere. Such a music of Chopin's has a unique characteristic uncomparable to his contemporary composers' music. The Polonaise play the most important role in Polish folk music and shows strong racial characteristic as Polish dance music. Among his works, polonaises may well be a piano work representing his music well. He composed 18 polonaises in total, but this study analyzed his last work "Polonaise Fantaisie Op. 61". As guessed from its title, this work features a unique form as well as a fantasy unlike his other polonaises. 「Polonaise - Fantaisie A♭Major, Op. 61」 in view of the melody and harmony. It is as creative as the Fantaisie and shows Polish character and emotion quite clearly without being bound by strict forms among Chopin's Polonaise works. Furthermore, its 5 themes using or varying the unique rhythms of polonaise serve to intensify the unity of the entire piece. Besides, cadenza style introunction, free accompaniment figue and fantastic chromatic progression are all combined to highlight Chopin;s masterpiece. In this work, Chopin's musical characteristics and personality show well who the best composer and pianist in the Romantic era.
