Abstract
The thesis of "the end of art" by Arthur C. Danto(1924- ), a representative American philosopher and art critic, is one of those that have been disputed in our days. It would be, also, a model of theories of contemporary art.
This paper is going to investigate the thesis critically. And I'll try to considerate the significance of Danto's thesis, and discuss the art historical problems in it. Since appeared in 1980s, Danto's thesis, "the end of art", have been controverted. Danto emphasized, in his major work After the end of art, that "the end of art" did not mean a death of art, but a end of story. Here, we can see that his approach to art lay in historical perspective, not aesthetical ; in art historical problems, not art in itself. In this day, Danto's word, art is post-historical art.
This paper will investigate the background and meaning of Danto's "the end of art", by connecting with Hegel's philosophy of art and Warhol's work, and discuss how he take in and interpretate the development of comtemporary art and advance the pluralistic theory of art.
