Abstract
A study on Village Community Space as a Third Place for Single-Person Households -Focusing on Dong-gu, Gwangju City- Kim, Eui-Hwa Advisor : Prof. Moon, Jeong-min Department of Design Management Graduate School of Chosun University The number of single-person households in Korea continues to increase due to aging, declining marriage rates, and low birth rates, resulting in problems such as imbalanced diet, decreased ability to respond to disasters, and weakened social relationships. In particular, single-person households have a higher risk of loneliness and social isolation than multi-person households, which is causing secondary problems such as lonely death and suicide. Accordingly, the government and local governments are making efforts to form social families by revising the single-person household ordinance and strengthening regional social networks such as single-person household community centers and regional integrated care in living areas. However, a network is difficult to sustain if mutual relationships are not formed, and in order to form a network for a single-person household, it is necessary to naturally form relationships and form emotional bonds in a third place other than home and work. Gwangju City has been creating village community spaces since 2016 and operating and managing them under the leadership of residents, forming relationships between residents through natural interactions. In particular, its function is expanding, playing a central role in resolving social problems such as cultural alienation, care, and breakdown in communication by operating programs for single-person households or vulnerable groups. Therefore, based on the continuous increase in single-person households and the resulting changes in the community, this study proposes the concept of a third place for single-person households and seeks ways to utilize village community space. In particular, we looked at the current status of Dong-gu, Gwangju City, an area with a high ratio compared to single-person households nationwide. Through this, we redefined the function and role of village community space to determine its value and utilization direction as a third place for single-person households. I would like to present . The progress of the study to suggest ways to utilize village community space as a third place for single-person households is as follows. Chapter 2 theoretical consideration understands the concept through previous research on single-person households, third places, and village community spaces, and examines changes in the lifestyle of single-person households and the characteristics and correlation between third places and village community spaces. did. Based on this, three characteristics of village community space as a third place for single-person households were derived: convenient accessibility, open territoriality, and recreational diversity. In Chapter 3, the case study investigated the status of eight village community spaces in Dong-gu, Gwangju City. In Chapter 4, through this research process, the research conclusion synthesized the overall contents of the research and presented a plan to utilize village community space as a third place for single-person households. The research results are as follows. It was located adjacent to a major pedestrian route, providing convenient accessibility, and areas for the majority were prominent within the multi-purpose space. Additionally, a variety of recreational activities are taking place by utilizing multi-purpose spaces and shared kitchens. Therefore, as a third place, it was found that it is important to create various areas in the village community space where single-person households can make autonomous choices according to the purpose of use as well as convenient access according to changes in lifestyle, and to provide a variety of enjoyable experiences.
