Abstract
Korean painting is a deeply rooted cultural endeavor that goes beyond the realm of traditional art and can be considered one of those practices that have historically defined the current society.
South Korea broke away from traditional culture after the era of enlightenment, and this has not only affected culture but also social consciousness and national identity. There is an obvious trend of modern-day Koreans disregarding traditional Korean culture and art, as art and education have also been affected by the introduction of Western culture. This can be seen as cultural toadyism, and it is important to take interest in traditional Korean culture by recognizing these phenomena and creating solutions.
|Given this background, it is imperative to pass on Korea’s historical heritage to subsequent generations through education and help Koreans develop and understand their cultural roots in practical terms. However, since the era of enlightenment, traditional thoughts, culture, and art surrounding Korean painting have faced prejudice because of the influence of Western art and culture derived from material civilization. In light of such issues, this study aims to explore guidance measures for teachers to help familiarize students with Korean painting in easy and practical ways.
Through literature and other sources, the study analyzed the theoretical background of ink wash painting as well as the state of education in Korean painting, as identified through five different elementary school art textbooks under the 2015 national revised curriculum, and identified their problems.
The results showed that the lack of programs to encourage students to express themselves using traditional Korean art tools was a serious problem. On the basis of the problem, the study proposed methods to revitalize traditional art education and identified teaching plans that can be applied in the field with a focus on practical activities.
This study identified teaching plans for new and engaging techniques of expression by integrating Western techniques such as marbling and papier collé, while maintaining the spirit of India ink, a traditional tool used in Korea, to make traditional art classes in elementary schools more effective. This is significant as it may improve students’ aesthetic sensibility and sense of shape, while they inherit and develop traditional art.
