A study on the conditions of corporal punishment to Taekwondo athletes and their psychological changes after corporal punishment

This study aims to examine the conditions of corporal punishment which has been conventionally inflicted on athletes without clear standards as an educational means, their psychological changes after corporal punishment, and the effects of difference in awareness of necessity of corporal punishment on psychological changes of elementary Elite Taekwondo athletes and devise a method to establish and apply rational training methods for desirable educational activities and practice. Especially, it is considered that the research on the conditions of corporal punishment with elementary school students in the period of growth can be used as helpful material for educational purpose.
This study made total 340 questionnaires and delivered to male and female Taekwondo athletes who participated in national elementary school Taekwondo game in 2016 and total 320 responses except 20 questionnaires which were impossible in processing data were analyzed.
First, the frequency of corporal punishments to elementary elite Taekwondo athletes who were the 6th graders or had one year or more athletic career was highest as 2~3 times a month. Such a punishment was inflicted on male students by a Taekwondo coach and female students showed high indirect punishment frequency with corporal punishment. The cause of corporal punishment was recognized as only for skill improvement in both male and female athletes.

Second, on the psychological changes of Taekwondo athletes after corporal punishment, the students in the 2nd and 4th grade showed the psychological changes after corporal punishment and female students showed more psychological changes after corporal punishment than male students. These results suggested that the corporal punishment might cause negative antipathy rather than positive effect in acquiring exercise skills and moreover it could leave a negative recognition of exercise.
