This study aimed to make lesson plans of percussion improvisation, using Orff pedagogy, that is fitting to the school environment enabling students to experience their music in creative and various ways. To this end in literature reviews, Orff's music approach, improvisation, educational value, and teacher's role and attitude were considered. Providing a guideline of pertinent teaching methods on percussion, this research proposes effective lesson plans of percussion for having desirable lessons enough to give good influence and impact to the youth. Especially using Orff's approach, this paper classified teaching into four different stages, such as 'percussion understanding', 'imitation and search', 'percussion practice', 'percussion ensemble and improvisation'.
Example of Lesson plans based on above-mentioned four stages are as follows: This paper studied and formed total eight lesson plans related to first grade middle school music class. Each one of the following performances formed two lessons: rhythm ensemble for percussion improvisation (piece: "Ppappappa" by Crayon Pop), percussion improvisation using korean music for orchestra (piece: "Birds, birds, robin" by Lee, Sungcheon), percussion improvisation using orchestra (piece: "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" by Benjamin Britten), and improvisation using Orff percussion (piece: "Jeju Island's Blue Night" by Sung, Sikyung).
The results of this research are summarized as follows:
Firstly, lessons of percussion improvisation using Orff's approach can use various percussion instruments as well as words rhythm and body expression and so, with resulting improvisation, students can actively and interestingly participate in class.
Secondly, lessons of percussion improvisation using Orff's approach can be applicable to any class of impression, Korean traditional music, singing, and instrumental music. In addition, body percussion allows improvisation with clapping and knee-tapping and so students could have more interests in music itself.
Thirdly, lessons of percussion improvisation using Orff's approach are suitable even to those students who do not have any music expertise or specialty in music instruments.
Lastly, percussion improvisation using Orff's approach can develop spontaneous creativity, which is the highest level of music education according to Orff, and also it can cultivate cooperative sociality through percussion ensemble performance in small group.
Based on these results, this study discussed how classes of percussion improvisation using Orff's approach become more desirable music classes.
