The Relationship between Musical Self-Concepts in Alternative High School Students and Smart-phone Addiction.

This study aims to identify the musical self-concepts of alternative high school students and their degree of smart-phone addition. For this purpose, this study analysed how well the subjects formed musical self-concepts and their degree of smart-phone addiction using a questionnaire. Based on the results, the relationship between the musical self-concepts of the subjects and smart-phone addiction was analysed. Interviews using a questionnaire were given in May, 2014 and three types of measurement instruments were used in the research. To identify how well the subjects understood the questions given, the time needed to complete the questionnaire, and problems in completing the questionnaire, a preliminary test was made in March, 2014 targeting 78 high school students in G city. As it was discovered that a total of twenty or thirty minutes were needed to complete the questionnaire, based on the results, a final questionnaire was developed. The period of data collection ranged from May 1st to 10th, 2014. The questionnaire developed was distributed only to 80 students who understood the purpose of the study and agreed to participate in the research.
The results of this study are presented as follows: First, in considering the differences in musical self-concepts of the subjects according to gender, the mean value for male students was 2.73 and that for female students was 2.48. The difference was statistically significant and this indicates that the degree of male students' musical self-concepts was higher than that of the female students.
Second, when the differences in smart-phone addiction of the subjects according to gender was investigated, the mean value for male students was 2.02 and that for female students was 2.24. The difference was statistically significant. This means that female students' addiction to smart-phones was more serious.
Third, although the causes and effects are not definitely known as the correlation between the degree of smart-phone addiction of the subjects and musical self-concepts was low, there was a difference in smart-phone addiction and musical self-concepts according to gender.
Based on the results above, this study suggests that a rapidly-changing educational environment and the bad influence of smart-phones on students should be investigated and it is expected that examining what relationship there is between the musical self-concepts of high school students and the degree of smart-phone addiction will be meaningful to the healthy emotions of adolescents and for effective music education.
