Abstract
In this thesis, status of art lectures targeted for adults were surveyed and analyzed to identify educational functions and contents of adult art lectures, which takes place as lifelong education. This was done in order to promote qualitative improvements in education conditions and programs. Furthermore, establishment of basic educational environment required for activation of lifelong education for adults were suggested.
Amongst the organizations in which art education programs for adults have been established, museums that are relatively public with systemized art lecture contents were set as study subjects for survey and analysis.
Lifelong education includes all forms of learning from the time of birth until death, and was implemented with the aim of being able to cope with the flow of drastically changing society.
Starting with the Saemaul Movement in 1970, modernization
movements expanded within Korea and resulted in rapid social changes.
As a compliance to the rapidly changing society and supplementary concept of school education, lifelong learning was introduced in order to make learning possible for everyone regardless of the time or location for a lifetime.
In the mid 1960's, lifelong education started being advocated in the education field of each nation around the world and it was introduced to South Korea in 1980.
In the late 1990's, it settled down within the borders of education policies as the lifelong education act was enacted in 2000.
Various lifelong education facilities were introduced along with the enactment of the lifelong education act, and facilities that are not related to education such as community centers, cultural centers of department stores, and libraries are working for implementation of lifelong learning.
Museums are organizations established for public interests. Due to the requests of art major education by the citizens, art lecturers were introduced according to the educational necessities of citizens. The lectures are being actively operated to this day.
In museums, art education signifies education completed through arts and alternative education. Art education of modern museums are not national education conducted through arts or
art education for the minority. Instead, it signifies culture of aesthetic sentiments for all citizens, and stands for social education and lifelong education for citizens aside from school education.
Art education of museums are one of the important social functions. The core objective of social education functions in museums are to encourage the public to enjoy artistic cultures and allow enhancement in the quality of life. Therefore, as South Korea has a short history for museums, in order for arts to settle in as a part of culture that is shared by the public, active development and practice of art education programs in museums are required.
In the opening of this thesis, the importance of art education for adults, which is a part of lifelong education, was recognized and the direction of the study was determined. Chapter 2 clarified the concept of lifelong learning, and the theoretical background was examined as the necessity and characteristics of lifelong learning were based on literature and previous studies.
In Chapter 3, functions and roles of museums are identified, and the origin and importance of museum education are considered.
Chapter 4 includes analysis through cases of education programs in museums that operate art education programs. Functions are derived based on education of art museums aside from lifelong education, and problems and improvements are considered.

If effective educational research programs with application of museums become activated through museum education in the lifelong education society, museums will expand into a place of learning that can lead the lifelong education society and develop creative art education as well as broaden the way of thinking. The significance of this study is that effective approaches were suggested and examined.
