Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is aimed at analyzing compound stress which could bring about differences in its meanings and proposing effective ways of teaching English compound stress pattern to Korean learners in English class. Stress in English plays an important role in communicating with native speakers since it changes meanings of utterances depending on their own stress pattern in the same surface structure. Because Korean learners have little knowledge of its significance, they have some problems in communication. Thus, it is necessary to teach accurate knowledge of stress to Korean learners and give them opportunities to practice pronouncing accurate stress patterns of compounds and noun phrases.
This study has five chapters as follows:
Chapter Ⅰ describes the importance and necessity of teaching English stress in class.
Chapter Ⅱ gives general knowledge of compounds and their multiple interpretation while producing ambiguous structures. This study also includes components consisting of compounds.
Chapter Ⅲ deals with the general stress patterns of compounds and noun phrases with the introduction of the Compound Stress Rule and the Nuclear Stress Rule of SPE and the Lexical Category Prominence Rule of Metrical Phonology. In general, it will be shown that the first stress of compounds is assigned in the first element consisting of a compound while in noun phrases, the first stress is assigned in the second element.
Chapter Ⅳ suggests various methods of teaching the English compound stress rules and the noun phrases stress rule such as discrimination task, matching task and marking task. These methods focus on helping the learners to understand ambiguous structures with multiple interpretation and based on them, to produce accurate stress patterns of compounds and noun phrases.
Chapter Ⅴ summarizes all the previous chapters.
