Abstract
The activity of composition as part of the music curriculum offers students an opportunity to apply their musical concepts learned through the activity of teaching and learning so as to be able to express their creative abilities and deepen their creative thinking. However, the overall teaching-learning music activities so far have emphasized vocal activities, music appreciation and theoretical learning, while the composition component has not only been limited to composition activities of simple forms but the opportunities themselves for such activities have not been utilized. The reasons for this can be attributed to teachers' insufficient understanding of the compositional component of textbooks as well as to the relative lack of lesson plan materials. Moreover, in the sixteen first-year middle school music textbooks that were newly revised and

published as a result of the 2007 revised curriculum, there is a deficiency of analytical materials in the composition component.
Therefore this study, on consideration of the necessity for improving students' creative thinking and practical abilities in composition by introducing higher-quality composition activities into the music classroom, has undertaken an analysis of the sixteen first-year middle school music textbooks published as part of the 2007 revised curriculum. The forms presented in the composition component of these textbooks were analyzed, and their structural characteristics arranged, according to publishing company.
The results of the analysis reveal that the composition component, in comparison with activities such as vocal music, instrumental music and music appreciation, is given very little weight and that even model presentation plans for the classroom are insufficient. All that are offered are such simple-form activities as "Making Simple-Style Compositions" and "Making Rhythms and Melodies for Improvised Performance."
In order to realize more meaningful composition instruction, it is hoped that there will be more analysis of the composition component of music textbooks together with the development of effective teaching plans in the future.
