Abstract
As the Korean education has been changed from the first curriculum to the revised in 2007, it is essential that the Korean traditional music education should be improved in terms of both quality and quantity. The education has had about 35% in the revised textbook. However, there are many difficulties that remain in the education due to the lack of appropriate teaching methods and materials.
The main aim of this study is to research by focusing on the Kodaly method, considered to be a proper guidance in the Korean Traditional music education. This method is expected to complement the current ways of teaching, to improve overall musical skills in middle school students, and to stimulate their interest in singing.
This study presents not only the philosophy and ideology of Kodaly, and his teaching method, but also what to be the revised version of Korean traditional music curriculum in 2007. Moreover, after studying on the Korean traditional songs in the revised textbook of middle school first grade, I will come up with a guidance plan of Korean traditional songs based on the Kodaly method, including rhythm syllable system, mobility method, and hand signs.
The guidance plan in this study will contain these specifications. First, I will try to make it easier to learn about rhythms through rhythm syllable system, and enhance sense on pitch by using hand signs. Second, I will suggest the way to heighten skills in reading music through the mobility method. Above all, my goal is to arouse interest in Korean traditional music by applying Kodaly method in singing Korean traditional songs.
However, I will emphasize on the Solfege so that students can read music with an organized system, which is the most necessary method in teaching the Korean traditional music, and will present various methods based on Korean traditional songs to recover the tradition. When the method is reformed to be appropriate in the Korean traditional music education, it will assist students to become musically literate. Furthermore, it will help people to understand the importance of Korean traditional songs and to enjoy them more. I expect the guidance plan can be used and adopted to the Korean traditional music education.
