Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a disability-awareness program on improving high school girls' attitudes toward students with disabilities and self-esteem. This study was conducted following the non-equivalent control group design. A total of 42 first-grade girl students at a high school in M city participated in this study; the experimental group consisted of students who volunteered to take part in a disability-awareness program as a special activity class, while the control group was recruited to approximate the number of the students in the experimental group. Two groups did not differ statistically significantly in religion, number of family members with disabilities, inclusive education experience, service experiences at institutions for individuals with disabilities, etc. The researcher designed and implemented a 10-session program, including such strategies as information provision, group discussion, and disability-simulated experiences. A 30-item self-reported instrument was used to assess the participants' attitudes toward students with disabilities which address school, personal, and social domains. A 10-item self-reported instrument was employed to measure the self-esteem of the high school girls. Data were analyzed using two-independent t tests on the change scores from pretest to posttest on each of the dependent variables. The results did not indicate that the disability-awareness program had the effects on improving the participants' attitudes toward students with disabilities and self-esteem.
