Abstract

There are many poems to song their hometown both in Oriental and Western world and as it is, there also have been many poems from the classical poetry to the modern poems incessantly in Korea. Especially, 'the poem of hometown' intensively appeared to the top in 1930s, which can be said as a formative period of modern poetry. Baek seok remembers his past day's hometown and childhood to restore lost original world in the loss sense with being deprived of country and hometown. It would have been very difficult to live a wandering life from the loss of his hometown where he lived with satisfaction and tranquility. Therefore Baek seok also would have tried to recover his lost ego and restore damaged world. The outcome of the effort is just his childhood and the background is just his hometown. I researched his poetry by dividing into his hometown in childhood space and in wandering space. When summarizing this, as a means of expressing original hometown in childhood space, first, there is food. It takes an important role in revealing harmonious community world as well as expressing original hometown in childhood. In addition, food is the most essential element to make the human life plentiful. The food related with the feast clearly recalls the past memory attached to the childhood life. Second, he used the voice of young speaker as a very effective means to refresh for folk emotion and nostalgia. And also he relieves the world of sincere and folk life by suggesting it with children's view excluding grown up explanation and experience with pure and objective eyes. Third, he sets up the animal as the same level's body with human race in the relationship and so considers it as a member of community. We can understand that it reflects his universal love and pan-community world view so it takes an important role in reorganizing his original world. That is to say, he leads the community life by reproducing the shape of hometown in childhood space. He takes the means to reproduce hometown in wandering space as followings. First, by food, speaker's loneliness and longing for hometown are doubled and by food culture of people whom he meets in wandering space, the homogeneity is recovered. Second, Baek seok receives traditional people's figures as a fate in his poems and describes the pure emotion that is overcoming pains. And he makes us listen to the voice of self-reflection and confession to investigate present ego. That is to say, he gets to overcome longing for hometown and introspect ego through his voice. Third, the thing that he tries to say with the animal ultimately is just the desire for peaceful world. He speaks the desire for amicable and peaceful hometown resulting from wandering and travel by tragic reality with the animal. That is to say, for him, all the animals in the nature are his friends and the members of the community. Like this, the poem of Baek seok by himself strengthens the sense and positive power to live the life for which he has wandered to find out through reproducing hometown and wandering. It is useless to say that this spirit of a poet is living in his poems entirely.
