- Abstract
- The literal meaning of umbrella is‘a device to protect you from rain’. However in various contexts it refers to‘inclusion in an organization,’'protection,' 'influence,' 'control.' The research was conducted to answer the following questions. 1) How many different meanings do wusan and umbrella have in various contexts? 2) whether Korean wusan and English umbrella share their extended meanings or do they mean something different?
The prototypical meaning of‘a device to protect from rain’is extended to ‘protection,’‘influence,’and‘control’through the metonymy OBJECTS FOR FUNCTION. Umbrella refers to its main function of ‘protection,’as well as its additional function,‘control.’In the sentence Renegotiation of the Korea-US FTA in the US Security Umbrella, umbrella designates two meanings. First, Korea is protected by the U.S. security umbrella. Second, the U.S. takes advantage of the negotiation by using military cooperation with Korea in the renegotiation of the FTA. The control meaning is derived because people under the umbrella must follow wherever the person who holds the umbrella in order to be protected from the rain.
