Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to look into the lives of each composer and the works, centering around the researcher’s graduation recital program “D. Scarlatti Sonata K.118 in D major, K.455 in G major”, “L.v. Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No.26 in E flat major, Op.81a”, “F. Schubert Wanderer Fantasie, Op.15” and analyze structures of the pieces.
D. Scarlatti was an original keyboard music composer in the 18th century. He had composed 500-600 sonatas while serving the Spanish Royal families and that’s the reason why one can find much of Spanish touch in his music. I will examine the Spanish factors and different keyboard instrument techniques and flamboyant style through K.118 and K.455
L.v. Beethoven is one of crucial figures who represents the classicism. His work "Piano Sonata No. 26, Op.81a", known as "The Farewell", was written during the years 1809 and 1810. He titled each movement and it is different from the conventional classicism style. Beethoven’s unusual features and styles will be examined through each movement in this paper.
F. Schubert’s “Wanderer Fantasie, Op.15” was written in 1822 and has free sonata style. The rhythm and melody used in his lied :Der Wanderer, D.493" is used throughout the whole movements. Schubert’s musical features and cyclical pattern will also be dealt in this paper.
D. Scarlatti had composed 500-600 works and his sonatas are short and simple mostly in binary form, using repeat signs. Also, “Sonata K.118 in D major” used acciaccatura and “Sonata K.455 in G major” has a feature of repeating one note successively. Both works are in binary forms and Parts A and B could appear interchangeably.
“The Farewell Motif” appears in “Beethoven Piano Sonata No.26 in E flat major, Op.81a” and this changes and develops throughout the first movement and “attacca” was used in the transition between the second movement and the third.
“Schubert Wanderer Fantasie, Op.15”was composed using the melody and rhythm of accompanying figure which were used in his lied “Der Wanderer D.493” Also, it is in cyclical pattern and the thematic melody appears throughout the whole movements. In “Wanderer Fantasie, Op.15”, he showed the Fantasie aspect, using abrupt change and contrast and I could see why he is a composer of romanticism by using flamboyant melody and harmony.
I anticipate that this paper could be of felp to artists who play Scarlatti, Beethoven, and Schubert.
