Abstract
Harmful algae blooms (HABs) occur in Korea and other countries around the world causing many problems in rivers and lakes. Due to the excessive propagation of harmful algae, scum is formed on the surface of the lake, resulted in blocking oxygen, damage of aquatic organisms and threats human health etc.
In this study, 5-benzylidenerhodanine derivatives were synthesized using Rhodanine and algicidal activity was measured against Cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena flos-aquae), and non-harmful algae (Selenastrum capricornutum).
29 compounds were synthesized and analyzed for structure-activity relationship (SAR). To analyze the structure-activity relationship, we also introduced substituents at phenyl ring. It appears that halogen substituents showed good inhibitory potency against Microcystis aeruginosa.
Further structure-activity analysis indicated that the introduction of chlorine at C2 showed higher algicidal effects than C3 of phenyl ring. Among the various synthetic benzylidenerhodanine derivatives tested, 5-(2,4-Dichlorobenzylidene)-rhodanine was found to be the most potent inhibitor against Microcystis aeruginosa with LC50 value of 0.75 μM. Overall, these results highlight a possible method for controlling and inhibiting Microcystis aeruginosa using benzylidenerhodanine derivatives.
